Cairns
is the international gateway into Tropical North Queensland
and Australia's premier regional city. It is a vital, cosmopolitan
city whose 120.000 residents enjoy an enviable tropical lifestyle.
It has become known as the safest tropical city in the world.
Two of the worlds greatest natural treasures - the Great
Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforests surround Cairns,
both are World Heritage listed.
Cairns International Airport is the nations sixth busiest
in terms of international and domestic passenger movements,
and the city also is rated the third most popular tourist
destination in the country after Sydney and Brisbane. More
than three million international and domestic passenger movements
were recorded during 2003/04.
Cairns accommodation is plentiful with plenty of choices
to suit all budgets. You can stay at a 5 star resort, motel,
hotel, backpackers or caravan park or for the families there
are lots of self contained apartments to choose from as well.
Cairns is the perfect location to head out into the Coral
Sea for a visit to the Great Barrier Reef. Every day a wide
range of dive charter vessels and daily reef boats depart
from Marlin Jetty (in the centre of Cairns) carrying first
time snorkellers and divers out to the Great Barrier Reef
and beyond. There are also plenty of land based tours that
depart Cairns and head north, south, east or west into the
tropical rainforests or up to the Atherton Tablelands.
